Resident: Where do the used batteries go?

Citizen Ms. Li is an environmental enthusiast. A few years ago, she saw relevant reports that a battery rotted in the ground can permanently lose the value of one square meter of soil, and toxic substances can enter the body and damage nerves. Systems, etc., can even cause cancer. Concerned about the pollution of the environment, Ms. Li collected and stored the used batteries at home, such as cell phone batteries, clocks, remote controls, and button batteries on children's toys. One year later, Ms. Li collected more than 10 disposable batteries.

In order to dispose of the used batteries that she collected, Ms. Li said she found many departments and did not take charge of the recycling of used batteries. Ms. Li said that in order to minimize environmental pollution, the mobile phone battery was sent to some second-hand mobile phone recycling places, but other used batteries could not be disposed of.

Environmental protection: classification of waste batteries

Regarding the disposal of used batteries, Chief of Environmental Protection Department of our city Qiu Ke told reporters that in 2003, the “Policies for the Prevention and Control of Pollution of Used Batteries” issued by China has clearly stated that the collection of used batteries focuses on discarded rechargeable batteries and button-type Disposable batteries, under the current lack of effective recycling technology, are not encouraged to collect waste disposable batteries that have reached the national low or no mercury requirements.

Mr. Qiu said that at present, all batteries required to be sold must be mercury-free or contain a small amount of mercury, and the mercury content is only 1 ‰ of the total battery. The ordinary No. 5 and No. 7 batteries sold in the market have reached low mercury. Standards for non-mercury, usually marked "Mercury-free and environmentally friendly", which can be naturally degraded, and scattered disposal is generally not harmful to the environment. After the mercury-free battery is placed with domestic waste, after the landfill with domestic waste, the heavy metals in the battery enter the landfill and the amount of seepage is very small, and the waste is only a small part of the domestic waste. Leakage and other facilities do not constitute pollution. This method of disposing of used batteries is much less polluting than the concentrated collection of used batteries. For rechargeable batteries and accumulators with high environmental pollution, at present, there are also some individual units that recycle and then disassemble and sort them, which can be reused to obtain recycling benefits.
